Biographical History
The Spring Valley Baptist Church located at 8801 E 79ths Street in Raytown, Missouri began as a mission
Sunday School in 1943. Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Hentschel came from the Raytown Baptist Church to take
charge of the Sunday School of about 38 people. The met in the vacant Spring Valley School building at
79th and Spring Valley Road. In 1946 worship services began with Rev. J.V. Crenshaw as the first pastor.
The church was organized on October 12, 1948 with 57 members with Rev. Wesley Dice as the pastor.
The School building was purchased by the Church in 1953 and the following year adjacent land was
purchased. In 1956 an extension was added to the building and by 1959, a sanctuary that could hold
about 900 people was completed to accommodate the growing congregation.
Early pastors include:
J.V. Crenshaw, 1946; Robert G. Capra, 1947; Wesley Dice, 1947; Leonard E. Dyer, 1949; Joe C. Porter,
1955; Bob Stokes, 1972; Allen Harrison, 1976; Dennis McGowan, 1981.
Scope and Content
This collection includes items relating to the history of Spring Valley Baptist Church in Raytown,
Missouri. Services and sermons from the 1960s through 2017 have been recorded onto CDs, DVDs, VHS
tapes, and magnetic tapes. Scrapbooks, photos, written histories, and church directories illustrate the
history of the members and events of the church. The collection is arranged by format type.
