Biographical History
Samuel and Amanda P Downing of Lexington, Kentucky married on April 14, 1840 and had six children.
After his wife died, Samuel married, Margaret (Maggie) Combs in 1855. Samuel and two of his sons,
Samuel Jr. and Alfred O., moved to Missouri in 1857. The two boys attended Kemper Military Academy
in Booneville, Missouri and the family eventually purchased a farm between Higginsville and Dover.
Samuel, his new wife, and the rest of the family came to Missouri in 1858. Samuel died on August 28,
1871.
Scope and Content
Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel and Amanda, probably wrote the family record pages pertaining to
her parents and siblings. Her brother, Sabert B. Downing of Higginsville, Missouri, probably wrote other
pages. Sabert had no children so the family Bible was given to Mary H. Downing Knipmeyer who wrote
the note on the inside of the Bible. The family Bible contains names and dates of the Downing family.
Record of births, marriages, and deaths are written on the family record pages of the Bible.
