Biographical History
Chester Coleman was born about 1812 in Connecticut and married Hannah Stevenson in 1845 in Summit
County, Ohio. Hannah is the daughter of Thomas Stephenson. William C. Coleman, the son of Chester
and Hannah, was born in February of 1864 in Ohio. Between 1870 and 1875, after the death of Hannah,
the family moved to Sebetha, Nemaha, Kansas where the family farmed.
William W. Stephenson was born on November 5, 1831 in New York City. He graduated from the
University of New York City in 1854 and became a lawyer. He was a Civil War veteran and after the war
became active in politics.
Scope and Content
The correspondence from William C. Coleman is mainly business and includes orders, receipts, and other
letters related to his wool sock business in Sabetha Kansas. The correspondence to Reverend Chester
Coleman is personal letters from family members.
