Biographical Sketch
Carl Betz was born in 1854 in Illinois, and was a pioneer in Physical Education in the
United States. In 1886 in Kansas City, Missouri, Betz introduced the first permanent
physical education program in public schools in the United States. For recognition of his
work in physical education, he was granted a silver medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition,
and a medal at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Betz was married to
Louise Wittig Betz and had several children, including Carl Egmont Betz, Annette
“Nettie” Betz, and Alma Betz, who are all also documented in the collection.
Scope and Content
This collection contains materials primarily collected by, created by, and about the Betz
Family in Kansas City, Missouri. This includes original deeds from Kansas City, as well
as family correspondences in both English and German. The collection also contains a
number of photographic negatives, including many taken by Carl Egmont Betz, a family
tree in French of the Garrigues family, and a folder of materials related specifically to
Carl Betz. Also contained in the collection is a Poll Book for Kansas City’s Precinct 1,
Ward 13 for the 1940 United States Election.
