Biographical History
The Kraft family emigrated from Germany to Russia during the early 1800s. Like many other Germans
who moved to a farm and settled Russia’s growing empire, the Krafts established a farm in Ukraine.
Second generation Martin Kraft and his wife Katherine continued the farming tradition. Their son, Frank
was born in 1866 and married Mary Kline in 1888.
Frank and Mary Kraft immigrated to the United States from Russia around 1909. Their seven children
also immigrated at this time. The family arrived in Baltimore by ship and then took a train to Aberdeen,
South Dakota. The family established themselves in the Aberdeen community working in the
construction and railroad industries.
Descendants of Frank and Mary Kraft continue to live in the upper Midwest region.
