Biographical History
The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a fraternal organization founded in England during the 18th
century. In the United States, the first official lodge was founded as the Washington Lodge #1 in
Baltimore in 1819. Although nothing has been documented, there are several explanations for the
strange name. One explanation is that common laborers associating as a fraternity was peculiar or odd
for the time. Another explanation is that the original Odd Fellows were part of various or odd trades.
The Odd Fellows are divided into branches called lodges. The Odd Fellows became the first fraternal
organization to include men and women when the Rebekah degree was added in 1851. Members can
attain higher degrees within the Odd Fellows. The purpose of the organization is to provide help to the
members and the community. The three links of Odd Fellowship's symbol represent Friendship, Love,
and Truth.
