Biographical History
Anna (Annie) Arnot Gilbert was born April 1879 in St. Cuthbert, Scotland. Her family immigrated to the
United States and arrived in New York City on May 23, 1881. By 1900, the Arnot family was living in
Kansas City, Missouri and according to the census Annie was employed as a crayon artist. She married
Frank H. Gilbert on April 30, 1901 in Jackson County, Missouri. Frank and Annie had two sons before
Frank died on October 9, 1933. At the age of 70, Annie got remarried to Buena Vista Bird on October 14,
1951 in Kansas City, Missouri. She died in 1964 and was buried in Independence, Missouri.
Kenneth D. Gilbert was born January 31, 1912 in Atchison, Kansas. The Gilbert family moved to the
Independence, Missouri area where Kenneth attended William Chrisman High School. He married
Virginia Ruth Winters on June 2, 1940 in Independence, Missouri. Kenneth served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II. He enlisted on March 1, 1944 and mustered out December 18, 1945. He and his
wife lived in the Johnson County, Kansas area where he owned a number of art galleries. Kenneth died
on April 22, 1996 in Shawnee Mission, Kansas.
Virginia Ruth Winters Gilbert was born December 8, 1916 in Kansas City, Missouri. Her family later
moved to the Independence, Missouri area where Virginia attended William Chrisman High School. She
married Kenneth D. Gilbert on June 2, 1940. Virginia was an elementary specialist and teacher for a
number of school districts in Johnson County, Kanas as well as an author of children’s books. She also
assisted her husband in the operation of his art galleries. Virginia died on April 9, 2011 in Leawood,
Kansas.
