RESOLUTION
Whereas: The time came for the Maker of the Universe and the Master of us all to call
from the destiny of earthly life, the soul of Effie Jane Kerr.
Ad from the sadness of her life, we tell,
The sweetness of her life, as she did dwell
Among us here – friend, as true as stars above,
And one we all most dearly loved.
But in the passing of such a lovely soul, as that which found its home in the body of Effie
Jane Kerr, we, the Ladies of the Literary club of Ozark, who by knowing her in her home
and in our club, realize that only by an almost Infinite understanding of the great purpose
of motherhood and a full and comprehensive vision of the bond of friendship as lived the
soul of Effie Jane Kerr. And because we further realize that by her passing, this club has
lost a good member, and each one a true and trusting friend we resolve that her memory
shall be perpetuated by the spreading of this eulogy in the records of our club, and
Be It Further Resolved: That we furnish the bereaved relatives with a copy as an emblem
of sympathetic mourning, assuring them that in the sadness of their sorrow they may find
a sunbeam of gladness in the realization that her’s was a life of perfect motherhood; a life
devoted to building a monument of lasting friendships; and may we assure the mourning
hosts of relatives and friends, that no fire that can be builded on the altars of our speech
6
can relume the radiant spark which perished with the passing of Effie Jane Kerr; nor can
any blaze born in all our eulogy burn beside the sunlight of her useful life.
And we further believe that the essence of her life and death, if spoken by her, whom we
so dearly loved, would be in the words of the poet:
Sunset and evening star;
And one clear call for me –
Let there be no weeping at the bar
When I put out to sea.
