POEM:
I wanted ter axe yer, parson,
If you’d come down dar an’ pray
In de cabin, fer only er minit,
Over a small bit o’ clay?
Hit’s only a wee, black baby,
But ‘twus all we had, yer know,
An’ I guess, dough his face wuz black, his
Soul
Wuz white as de spotless snow.
When did he die? “twuz dis mawnin’:
Jest ‘fore de breakin’ o’ day,
De blessed white angels com’d, sah,
An’ toted his soul erway.
His poo’ ole mammy’s been grievin’
An’ moanin’ de whole long day- ‘Tain’t only de white folks dat loves dey
Chile
An’ mourns when it’s tooked erway.
De patter of little black feet, sah,
Dat never had wored no shoe
Wuz sweet ter me and his mammy
As little white foots ter you.
De music dey made when soundin’
On de cabin flo, so light,
Warn’t none de less sweet ter our ole
Black hearts
‘Cause dem little foots warn’t white.
De little black head dat’s lyin’
So still, wid de eyes closed tight,
Has cuddled so close ter me, sah,
When de sand man comed at night.
I know dat I’se gwine ter miss him,
An’ grieve fer him all de while –
But I reckon de angels wanted Gabe,
Dough he war er black man’s chile.
So I thought I’d ax yer, parson,
Ter offer er little prayer—
Ter plead wid de good ole marster
Ter watch over Gabe up dar.
I don’t b’lieve dat de angel,
When he goes ter call de roll,
Will draw any line ‘twixt a wee white
Chile
An’ little black baby’s soul.
