Biographical History
James William Caldwell, born Jan 7, 1840 in Kentucky, married Maria Jane Cooper, born March 9, 1848
in Missouri. Maria was the daughter of Washington Cooper and Maria Slusher. The Caldwell came from
Campbell County, Kentucky and settled in Dover, Missouri in the 1850s. The Cooper family was living in
Lafayette County in the 1840s when Washington and Maria were married. Both families farmed land
around Dover.
Scope and Content
Most of the family Bible records are in the same handwriting. The Bible include Caldwell, Cooper, Scott,
and Darnell families from Dover, Lafayette, Missouri. Record of births, marriages, and deaths are written
on the family record pages of the Bible. Also included on the record sheets are a handwritten epitaph
and a handwritten obituary.

wrapped in acid-free tissue paper. Some of the leather in the Bible has deteriorated (red rot).
