Featured Online Resource: Nineteenth Century British Library
Newspapers
Newspapers are wonderful genealogical resources. You can find obituaries, vital record information, and more in articles and
sections. Mid-Continent Public Library has many great newspaper databases of which Nineteenth Century British Library
Newspapers is just one. Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers is put together by the British Library from newspapers from
England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Each newspaper was chosen because they represented 19th Century British life. There is a
good mix of big cities and more rural areas and contains around 2 million newspaper pages. If you are researching an ancestor
from the United Kingdom, this will be a helpful resource.
Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers can be searched with a basic search, advanced search, publication search, or you
can browse publications by location. With the basic search, you can search keywords or an entire document. Results can also be
limited by publication date and title, as well as content set. The content set is differentiated between Nineteenth Century British
Library Newspapers and Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers, part 2. Advanced search adds further limiters, such as
place of publication, publication section, and frequency. There is also a language section which allows searching of Welsh
language newspapers. The main difference with the publication search is that instead of keyword, you search for a publication title.
Browsing publications by location is great if you know a certain area of the United Kingdom that you want to search. The list is
separated by country, then by city, and then by publication title. This is a great way to see exactly which titles are available in this
database.
Once you find results, Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers provides a number of ways to share or save that information.
You can print, email a citation, or download an image. If you choose to download an image, you can decide between PDF or HTML
as your format. The PDF option does allow for more than one page being downloaded at one time.
Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers is a great resource for anyone looking for ancestors in the United Kingdom. The
various ways to search and many different types of newspapers available are a great resource in any genealogist’s toolbox.
