Smith, Benjamin Howland
Biographical History
Benjamin Howland Smith was born on January 17, 1772 in Massachusetts. He married Silvia Howland on
November 18, 1794 in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Together they had eight children,
seven of whom survived. Around 1810, the Smith family moved from Massachusetts to Erie County,
New York. Silvia Smith died and was buried Erie County in 1812. Benjamin died on June 20, 1831 and
was also buried in Erie County.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of the family Bible for the Benjamin Howland Smith family. This Bible contains
family records for births, marriages, and deaths for Benjamin, his wife Silvia Slocum, and their children.
The records also contain information on Benjamin’s second wife, Rebecca Kirby. Also included in this
collection are the scanned family record pages, a pamphlet found in the Bible dated 1959, and a family
unit chart.
