Markee Family
Biographical History
Joseph Markee was born on June 23, 1823 in Orleans, Canada. Joseph participated in the California gold
rush during the 1840s and used the money he earned to buy farm land in Bureau County, Illinois. Joseph
married Mary Jane Waite on June 25, 1857 in Bureau County, Illinois. Together they had nine children,
seven of whom survived. Joseph and his family continued to farm in Bureau County as well as raising
cattle. Joseph died on May 26, 1906 and was buried in Buda, Bureau County. Mary Jane Markee died
July 18, 1931 and was buried in Bureau County.
