Biographical History
Bernice Slavin was born on October 14, 1910 to James and Nellie Slavin in Lancaster, Schuyler County,
Missouri. Bernice’s father was a farmer who worked land north of Lancaster. Bernice attended and
graduated from Lancaster High School. She also attended Culver-Stockton College, University of
Nebraska, and University of Missouri. On May 11, 1935, Bernice married John Burkeholder in Unionville,
Schuyler County. John and Bernice had one son, James N. Burkeholder. The Burkeholders resided in
Columbia, Boone County, Missouri. Bernice taught high school as well as worked as an admission advisor
at the University of Missouri. Bernice passed away on February 23, 2009 and was buried in Columbia.
