Biographical History
Alice K. Houts was born May 13, 1890 in Staten Island, New York. She married her husband, Henry Hale
Houts, June 30, 1929 in Johnson County, Missouri. Alice was the founder of the Westport Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). From the chapter’s inception in 1937, Alice was active
within the chapter as well as the state organization as historian for the Missouri DAR. She also authored
Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Missouri, a book that exists in many libraries across the United States. In
addition to her DAR membership, Alice was also a member of the Colonial Dames of American. Alice
passed away on November 13, 1974 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of administrative and personal papers of Alice K. Houts as well as business
correspondence. Items range in date from 1952 to 1970 and mostly cover the sale and creation of her
book Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Missouri. There is also a photograph of Alice taken in the 1940s.
Additionally, the collection includes clippings from newspapers and a series of articles titled “This Week
in Missouri History” compiled by Floyd C Shoemaker of the State Historical Society of Missouri. The
articles include biographical or burial information related to many early Missourians.
