Guy Lee Tinder, Jr. correspondence
March 16, 1952
Sun [Sunday] Eve [evening] 5 PM
Dear Agnes
Well it looks like I am another week nearer coming home. I hope all the rest go as fast as this
one. Today is not so pretty as last Sun it has been clouddy [sic] and damp all day. I finally got a couple
long looked for letters this week, one of them Wed [Wednesday] the other Thur [Thursday]. Was glad
to hear from you again but was disappointed when I didn’t get any mail Fri [Friday] or Sat [Saturday]. I
haven’t heard from home yet I expect there is some mail on the way thou [sic]. How have you been
feeling lately? good I hope. I suppose you are still working? What do you do on Sat [Saturday] Nites
anymore do you go to any dances? I wonder if you have seen Bob lately and do you know if he got
deferred from the Army again or not? Awful nosey aren’t I? You are about my only connections so you
will have to answer a lot of questions before I get home again. I should write Bob [page 2] only I doubt if
he would answer. I don’t have ways finding out things about the old gang in Leavenworth since back in
basic training. Time changes everything you know. We have a pretty good bunch of guys working for us
down at the office. At the present I am assistant foreman of maintiance [maintenance]. Don’t know
when I will start to H.E. school. In a way I am glad to go because of what I will learn. I will also be glad
when I do get through it thou [sic]. Friday I took training it was a little harder than last time we had
some PT [physical training] also took a hike. My mucels [muscles] are still stiff and sore first time I have
did anything like that for over 2 mo’s [months]. Last night the Eng. [Engineering] Section plus the R & U
shops gave a farewell party for Lt [Lieutenant] Hughes who is going back to the States it was quite a
shindig. They had a band to play the music, you ought to see the way the German people dance. No[t]
much like the good old Missouri way I only danced a couple times although they played quite a few
American tunes. Personally on a whole I don’t think the German women are as pretty as American
women. I have seen a few good looking ones thou [sic]. [page 3] I left at about 11:30. I don’t think the
party was over till 3:30 or 4. I have started taking a paper, (The Stars and Stripes) it keeps me up on
some of the funnies plus the sports which I like to read pretty good. I went to the show this eve
[evening] it wasn’t to bad “On Moonlight Bay” with Doris Day and Gordon Macral just something to
make me homesick. I guess all the Folks are okay? tell them all hello for me. From the sound of your
letter you all must have had some bad weather since I left so far I have been fairly lucky. So you don’t
think Jack would cry huh? I didn’t think I would ever cry over a woman either but I have once or twice
remember? Believe me it is possible I got those pictures back it took 6 days to get them developed. I
will send you some of them. Those 2 of the ships thought I would let you see how calm the ocean was.
The one with all the fellows on deck is what we had to do everyday stand up there for 3 hrs [hours], boy
how I hated it. That is a dilly of me isn’t it? looks like I am hanging on for dear life (not really). The
building with me by the corner is were I stayed at Zweibrucken the building with the busses [sic] by it is
the hotel I live in now. The terrace room right behind that buss [sic] is were [where] we eat. My room is
just above the terrace first one from the [page 4] corner on the right. I though[t] the one of us kids is
pretty good I want you to have it englarged [enlarged] and framed for us some time I am sending the
film. Have a 5 by 7 or some size like that. Send the small one back to me I only had 2 made so I will have
to send one to mom if Helen and Mary K want any you can give them the Neg [negative] or have some
made when you get the englargment [enlargement]. I have run out of anything to say so will close for
now. Got to write the folks to
So long Jr Tinder
P.S. Take care of yourself. I love you
